Minutes from the Fort Hood Heart of Texas Cursillo Board of Directors Meeting
May 30, 2007
I. Opening: The Fort Hood/Heart of Texas Cursillo Board of Directors meeting was brought to order
by President Linda Abrams at 6:15 PM at the conference room of Holy Family Catholic Church, Copperas
Cove. Deacon Jones opened the meeting with a prayer.
II Attendance: Those attending include Linda Abrams, Mike Krakowiak, Barb Krakowiak, Cynthia
Neve, Deacon Fred Jones, John Frost, Nyrma Navarro and Shirley Nagle. Absent members were Phyllis
Gogue and Orie Sanchez. Guest attending was Mike Kirkland.
III SPECIAL REPORT: Due to the recent rains and flooding conditions at the Good News Christian
Retreat Center, the Fall Men’s Weekend was canceled. Mike Kirkland, men’s coordinator, came to report
that he still has food in his freezer that was left over from the women’s weekend. Only questionable
items were some perishables. A suggestion was made to donate those items to the 58th Street Chapel
for their use.
Discussion followed about offering the leadership for the Fall weekend to Mike, since his team was
prepared. That involved checking dates and schedules. Scheduled date is November 8-11, Veterans
Day weekend. More discussion followed regarding changing the dates to have better participation.
Objections to the Veterans Day weekend included both soldiers and civilians, as it being a time they
would rather spend with family. Suggested dates were October 25-28 or November 1-4, depending on
availability of the facility and the priest.
It was decided that Mike would contact his team members and let them know that if they had made a
donation to the weekend, they were to contact Cynthia for a refund if they so desired.
It was brought up by Deacon Jones that more Pilgrim’s Guides are being used than those given to
candidates on opening night. The office was questioning why we were ordering so many when in a
typical year we need approximately 40. It was suggested that if team members forget theirs, or do not
have one, that they purchase one for a cost of $4.00, or use it for the weekend, then return it.
IV Minutes: May 5 2007 Minutes were read by John Frost. Corrections include the number of Jesuit
priests on post. There is only one Jesuit priest. Deacon Jones made the motion to approve Minutes,
seconded by Linda, motion carried.
V Old Business:
A. Parish Representatives: Shirley reported that all letters were sent on May 15, 2007. Those agreeing
to be their parish representative were Margit Wyers, St. Mary, Lampasas; Donna Shepard, St. Mary,
Temple; Charmaine Suprenant, St. Joseph, Killeen; Nyrma Navarro, 58th St. Chapel (St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton), Fort Hood; and Vera Swaney Holy Family, Copperas Cove. There will be follow up communication
to those who have not responded at this time.
B. Coordinators for Fall: Typically, upcoming coordinators are announced at the closing of the mens’
weekend. Since the men’s Fall Weekend was canceled, it was suggested that an Ultreya be scheduled
for June 10 and announcement made at that time. Motion was made by Linda to hold an Ultreya on June
10, seconded by Shirley. Motion carried. Discussion followed whether Mike Kirkland should coordinate
the Fall Weekend, or should it go to the one who had been previously selected and accepted. It was
agreed that Mike should have the opportunity.
C. Picnic: John is still working on details. No reservation has been made at this time.
Looking at getting some groups to help with activities. Suggested date is September 16, at Dana Peak
Park.
D. By-laws: After considerable discussion, it was decided that a small committee consisting of
Phyllis, John, Deacon and Shirley will meet on December 8, to implement the changes into the existing by-
laws and have them ready at the next Ultreya for final approval of the Board. The webmaster will then
post the by-laws on the web site.
VI. Board Member Reports
Lay Director: nothing new to add
Assistant Lay Director: nothing
Secretary: Absent
Financial Secretary: No report available, want to find out who on the men’s team donated, so a refund
can be made.
Pre-Cursillo Coordinator: Contacted the drivers who volunteered to transport candidates to the retreat
center, that the weekend was canceled. They will take care of the bulletin announcements for all
parishes regarding the Ultreya on June 10.
Post-Cursillo Coordinator: nothing
Outside Palanca Coordinator: absent
Spiritual Director: Nothing new with priests, except that only one Jesuit is assigned. Father Patrick
Murphy was a guest who spoke about Food for the Poor. Also, Victor Lugo from the National Cursillo has
contacted us about our ordering supplies and not belonging to National. Deacon said this should all
work itself out and be okay.
VII. New Business
A. Clean up at Elk. Due to the storm and rain damage at the retreat center, discussion was that we
make an offer to help with the expense of the clean up and repair. Deacon made a motion that we send
$500.00 to Liz to help with repairs and clean up. Seconded by Nyrma. Motion carried.
Some men had volunteered to go there and help clean up the Way of the Cross, and to cut down broken
trees, and do whatever was required. John said that Dave Perry could get some recycled wood chips to
be put along the Way of the Cross. It was decided that this would be a topic to discuss at Ultreya to see if
we could arrange something. A notice would also go out on e-mail to reach more people. A suggestion
was made to have a sign up sheet at Ultreya for anyone who could help.
Deacon said a designated offering has been made in the past for the retreat center, and that could be
another option, depending on the money situation.
Discussion also followed about the possibility of securing an engineering unit to go there and make
some repairs. Also, the PDO (Property Disposal Office) may have some items to donate.
Suggested that Liz be contacted to see if June 16th would be a suitable date for volunteers to go do
some clean up.
B. John made the suggestion that when or if situations arise that requires a board decision, that we
call an emergency meeting instead of relying on e-mail to make decisions.
C. Deacon brought up the “History of Cursillo” and Mike reminded us that it had been voted on that
whatever was in the script was sufficient for the weekend. Deacon further suggested that the article
“History of Cursillo” be put on the web site.
VIII. Closing. Deacon offered the closing prayer to end the meeting and it was adjourned at 7:45 PM.
