October 5, 2007
Minutes
I. Call to Order: The Board of Directors meeting was called to order at 6:50 P.M. by President Linda
Abrams at the Holy Family Conference Room. Deacon Fred Jones led us in prayer.
II. Attendance: Those in attendance were Linda Abrams; Shirley Nagle, Lay Director; Nyrma Navarro,
Assistant Lay Director; Cynthia Neve, Financial Secretary; John Frost, Post Cursillo Coordinator; and
Deacon Fred Jones, Spiritual Director. Absent: Orie Sanchez, Secretary; Phyllis Gogue, Outside Palanca
Coordinator; and Barb Krakowiak, Pre Cursillo Coordinator.
III. Minutes: The Minutes from the Board meeting on August 27, 2007 were presented. Motion was
made by Shirley Nagle to accept the Minutes, seconded by Deacon Jones. Motion carried.
IV. Old Business:
a. Picnic: It was agreed that this years’ picnic held on September 16, 2007 was very well attended
and a great success due to its convenient and central location to all communities. The dunking booth,
cake walk and The Price is Right game were successful. Having the playground immediately accessible
to all the children was a wonderful benefit. A special thank you goes out to Linda Jaramillo for providing
the grand prize of the day. Many thanks also to Phyllis, Barbara and Orie for providing door prizes. A
suggestion was made to make every effort to secure the Long Branch Park for our summer picnics in the
future.
b. Clean Up Day at the Retreat Center: The clean up day held on September 22, 2007 was very well
attended and all the workers were very diligent in getting right to the tasks on hand. The kitchen was
meticulously cleaned to include the refrigerator, freezer and stoves/ovens. The windows and light
fixtures in the dormitories were cleaned. The carpet was vacuumed and shampooed. Bathrooms were
cleaned and mopped thoroughly. A new sign, made and installed by Tito Rodriguez, was hung at the
entrance to the Stations of the Cross. Weed-eating was done along the walkway. The outside windows
and the patio were thoroughly cleaned. The chapel was vacuumed, dusted and the A/C filter changed.
The light in the stairway to the team dorm was repaired by a volunteer electrician. The contents of the
storage room were brought out, inventoried, organized and placed back in the storage room. The water
faucet on the outside of the kitchen door was repaired.
It was suggested that a “Clean Up Day” be made an annual event, perhaps in the spring time.
c. Cursillo Kids: There were no e-mails sent to the web site regarding children attending Ultreya.
V. New Business:
Lay Director: Dates for the 2008 Cursillo Weekends were discussed and it was agreed that the following
dates be scheduled with Liz at the Retreat Center and with Father Chuck. Spring weekends: April 17-20
(women) and June 5-8 (men). Fall weekends: October 16-19 (women) and November 13-16 (men).
A slate of names was discussed and agreed upon for the Spring weekends. The Lay Director will make
contact with those on the list to secure coordinators for the women and men’s weekends. Spring
Coordinators will be announced at the Men’s closing in November.
Next item was a lengthy discussion as to whether a small fee be requested to be turned in with
applications from candidates. There were pros and cons on each side of the issue, and it was decided
that the action be tabled at this time until further research can be made into the legality of such an action.
Assistant Lay Director: The Assistant Lay Director asked for a return of the key to the storage room at the
retreat center so she can gain access to the room this coming week for the set up of the Women’s
Weekend.
Secretary: Absent. (Recovering from double bypass surgery)
Financial Secretary: A comprehensive financial statement was given to each board member with
explanation of the expenses for the clean up day and the picnic, as well as donations received. Shirley
Nagle made a motion to accept the financial report as presented, seconded by Deacon Jones. Motion
carried.
Pre-Cursillo Coordinator: Absent. However, she sent an update about the drivers for the candidates to
the retreat center for the upcoming weekend.
Post-Cursillo Coordinator: He wanted to say that one reason the picnic was so successful was because
of the numbers of people who helped with the cooking, cleaning, and organizing games, etc. He is
working on the Epiphany Party to be held on January 6, 2008, looking for people to volunteer to be in the
Three Kings skit. An e-mail will be going out to the community asking for volunteers to portray the
characters needed for the skit. He asked for a budget of up to $250 for materials needed for the
Epiphany Party. Deacon Jones made a motion to approve the amount up to $250 and was seconded by
Nyrma Navarro. Motion carried.
Outside Palanca Coordinator: Absent. Has made arrangements for the Palanca letters to be printed out
and delivered to the women’s weekend.
Spiritual Director: Deacon Jones reported that a Hail & Farewell will be held at the Holy Family Social Hall
on October 20 to bid farewell to Fr. John Quinn, S. J.; Fr. Mike Albano and Fr. Raphael Eke, all departing
Fort Hood Chaplains. Currently serving are Fr. Dan Hussey, Fr. John Gabriel and Fr. Ken Nielson. Fr.
Gus will be returning with the 1st CAV for a short stay.
The 58th Street Chapel has received new vessels and Deacon Jones has requested the old supplies be
donated to Cursillo so that they won’t have to be transported to the Retreat Center each time a weekend
is held.
He has made arrangements to take the Cycle C book for Sunday, both large and small Communion Hosts
and Communion Wine to the Retreat Center.
Elections: Directors’ positions to be elected at the February 2008 Ultreya include: Lay Director, Pre-
Cursillo Coordinator, Post-Cursillo Coordinator and Outside Palanca Coordinator.
Cleaning Captains: John Frost and Linda Abrams are the designated clean-up captains for the upcoming
Women’s Weekend.
Next Scheduled Meeting: The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on November 2, 2007 with a
location to be determined.
VI. Being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 P.M. with a closing
prayer by Deacon Jones.
Respectfully Submitted,
Shirley Nagle, Lay Director
(for Orie Sanchez)
